DeltaTalk Radio -- Podcast -- June 30, 2011

Happy 4th of July!

A great show, featuring Mississippians who clearly serve our region and our area with a big Mississippi heart!

Featured on today's show:

Leigh Ann Mattox, recreation director for Tupelo Parks & Recreation. She's just one of the people responsible for Tupelo's 25th Anniversary "All-America City Family Picnic in the Park" on the 4th of July. She gives us some insight into The Big Bang, and a little behind-the-scenes on the 18 facilities run by the Parks people.

Megan Hines, education coordinator for the Greenville Arts Council. We had her on at the beginning of the month to talk about her clever use of social media to raise money to buy musical instruments for one of the poorest regions in the state (and in the country, for that matter). www.Greenville-Arts-Council.com.

Scott Burns, former U.S. Marine, a disabled vet, camping out at the Mall at Barnes Crossing to raise money to buy long distance calling cards for GIs overseas who still have to pay for their own calls! (www.ISupportTheTroops.org).

All that and more!

DeltaTalk Radio -- Podcast -- June 23, 2011

THE ALL-AMERICAN HOMAGE AND THE "50-POUND SICKNESS"

What a great week it was! Last week, we talked with Tupelo's mayor live from Kansas City, where a 35-person delegation was prepping for its All-America City Award presentation. The next day, it was official; Tupelo -- for the 4th time -- took the title. In this show, we look back on the excitement with Dr. Jay Dey, Zell Long, and Anna Freeman Wyatt, three members of the team that helped take Tupelo to the top.

Also, creativity guru Josh Mabus (mabusagency.com) and I talked about the infamous "50-Pound Sickness" suffered by business owners and lesser-experienced marketers. They're trying to get bigger bangs for their marketing bucks, but in reality, they're giving their customers a case of the yawwwwwns.

Kay Mathews, long revered in North Mississippi for her selfless work at Tupelo's Regional Rehabilitation Center, stopped by for a quick chat (http://regionalrehab.org).

And author/poet/civic cheerleader Patricia Neely-Dorsey -- one of the most upbeat people we ever had on the show -- read from her book of poems "Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia." You can catch up with her at http://patricianeelydorsey.webs.com.

All that and more!

DeltaTalk Radio -- Podcast -- June 9, 2011

Featured:
- Sherri Stevens, President/SRG
- Rex Harsin, Silent filmmaker
- Megan Hines, Social Media Maven

by Mike Russell, host of DeltaTalk Radio
Another packed DeltaTalk Radio broadcast on Thursday, June 9, including a final follow-up/send-off of the 2011 Elvis Festival, and interviews with three Mississippians who are making positive change the biggest constant of their worlds.

We start with Sherri Stevens, president of Stevens Resource Group (SRG), a Canadian firm that specializes in workforce development for the automotive industry. Stevens has recently moved SRG's corporate headquarters to Tupelo. There, she's constructed a virtual skill center where newcomers can build familiarity with the Toyota Production System (TPS) and thus gain confidence before SRG places them into her client companies.

Next we talk to Rex Harsin, silent filmmaker (yes, Virginia…I said SILENT FILM, that form of storytelling is still very much alive and well). Rex was live in the studio to talk about the silent film he’s produced and is taking to Italy later this year.

And all the way from Greenville, Mississippi, 180 miles southwest of Tupelo, but still very much a part of our incredible state -- Megan Hines, an enterprising young lady at the Greenville Arts Council – joins us to talk about her ingenious use of SOCIAL MEDIA to raise money to buy $50,000 worth of musical instruments for her part of the state. A musical “collective” she calls it. She’s a go-getter, you’re gonna love her. Trust me on this…

Another packed DeltaTalk Radio broadcast on Thursday, June 2, the first day of the 2011 Elvis Festival. 33 Elvises floating around, each one vying for the top spot as Tribute Artist. Where else but Tupelo, Mississippi, huh?  (okay…Memphis works, too). Brandon Bennett and Cody Slaughter — two of those hopefuls — joined me on the air, along with Daphene Hendricks from the Tupelo Elvis Festival office.

Will Kollmeyer and Mande Miller joined me from Itawamba Community College with some timely summertime (feels like, anyway…) tips for adult learners.

And Mike Pittman, Tupelo’s Mr. Coffee, joined me live in studio. He’s created a coffee company over the last couple of years to help in his ministry efforts. We sampled it during our segment.
